Was ist das?

Was ist Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment — also called endodontic therapy — is a procedure that removes infected, inflamed, or dead pulp tissue from inside the tooth. The root canals are then thoroughly cleaned, shaped, disinfected, and sealed with a biocompatible material to prevent future infection. A protective crown is placed afterward to restore the tooth's structure and strength. Contrary to widespread myth, modern root canal treatment with proper anesthesia is no more uncomfortable than a routine filling — and it is the only way to save a tooth that would otherwise require extraction.

Für wen ist das?

Ist diese Behandlung die richtige für Sie?

Root canal treatment is indicated when the tooth pulp becomes infected or irreversibly inflamed due to deep decay that has reached the nerve, a cracked tooth, repeated dental procedures on the same tooth, or trauma such as a knock to the mouth. Common symptoms include severe, lingering toothache, pain to pressure, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling around the tooth, or a visible abscess.

Was Sie bei MEDICUS erwarten können

Wir glauben, dass informierte Patienten bessere Ergebnisse erzielen. Hier ist jeder Schritt Ihrer Root Canal Treatment Behandlung.

1

Diagnosis & Digital X-Rays

Digital periapical X-rays and, where indicated, CBCT 3D imaging are used to determine the number of root canals, their anatomy, and the extent of infection or bone involvement.

2

Anesthesia & Isolation

Local anesthesia is administered to ensure complete comfort. A rubber dam is placed around the tooth to isolate it from saliva and maintain a sterile working environment throughout the procedure.

3

Access & Pulp Removal

A small opening is made through the crown of the tooth. Using fine hand and rotary instruments, all infected and damaged pulp tissue is methodically removed from each root canal.

4

Canal Shaping & Disinfection

Each canal is progressively shaped to a precise taper using rotary nickel-titanium files. Irrigation with sodium hypochlorite and EDTA solutions disinfects the canals and dissolves organic debris.

5

Canal Obturation (Sealing)

The cleaned canals are dried and filled with gutta-percha — a biocompatible, rubber-like material — sealed with endodontic cement to prevent bacteria from re-entering. An apex locator confirms working length accuracy.

6

Crown Restoration

Because a root canal-treated tooth has no blood supply and becomes brittle over time, a crown is placed to protect it from fracture. A tooth restored with a crown after root canal can last for many decades.

Nachsorgehinweise

Wie Sie Ihre Behandlung pflegen

Das Befolgen dieser Anweisungen gewährleistet die beste Heilung und ein langlebiges Ergebnis.

1

Eat only on the opposite side of the mouth until the permanent crown is placed

2

Take prescribed antibiotics for the full course if given — even if you feel better sooner

3

Over-the-counter ibuprofen (if not contraindicated) is usually sufficient for post-procedure soreness

4

The temporary filling or crown must not be left in place long-term — book the crown appointment promptly

5

Call us immediately if swelling increases, you develop a fever, or you lose the temporary filling

6

Once the permanent crown is fitted, care for it exactly like a natural tooth

Suffering from toothache while traveling, I had to have my first root canal treatment here. As someone with dental anxiety, this wasn't easy for me. It was a thoroughly positive experience — everyone was very friendly, and the dentist did a fantastic job, which was even praised by my dentist back in Germany.

FAQ

Häufig gestellte Fragen

Alles, was Sie über Root Canal Treatment bei MEDICUS.

Is root canal treatment painful?

With modern local anesthesia protocols, root canal treatment is no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. Most patients are surprised by how little they feel. Post-procedure soreness for 1–2 days is normal but manageable with standard pain relief.

How many appointments does root canal treatment require?

Most root canal treatments are completed in 1–2 appointments. Complex cases — multiple canals, severe infection, or calcified canals — may require additional sessions for thorough disinfection.

Is it better to have root canal treatment or have the tooth extracted?

Saving your natural tooth is almost always the better option. Natural teeth function better than any replacement, and the bone around the root is preserved. Extraction creates a gap that requires an implant or bridge — which costs more and takes longer.

Can a root canal-treated tooth become reinfected?

It is possible but uncommon. Reinfection can occur if the canals were not fully cleaned initially, if a crack develops in the tooth, or if the crown seal is compromised. A properly treated and crowned tooth rarely has problems.

Do I really need a crown after root canal treatment?

For back teeth (molars and premolars), a crown is strongly recommended because these teeth absorb heavy biting forces and a devitalised tooth is more brittle. For front teeth, a crown may not always be essential, depending on the remaining tooth structure.
