Capire Dental Cleaning
Professional dental cleaning — known clinically as oral prophylaxis — is the systematic removal of plaque, calculus (tartar), and surface stains from all accessible tooth surfaces, including areas below the gumline that daily brushing and flossing cannot reach. During the appointment, our hygienist also performs a full oral health assessment, checking for signs of early decay, gum disease, oral cancer screening points, and any changes since your last visit. Regular professional cleaning is the single most effective preventive measure for maintaining long-term oral health.
Questo Trattamento È Adatto a Te?
Professional cleaning is recommended for every patient every 6 months, regardless of how well you brush at home. Patients with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar build-up, or systemic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease may benefit from more frequent visits (every 3–4 months). Cleaning is also recommended before certain dental procedures such as whitening, orthodontic fitting, or implant placement.

Cosa Aspettarsi da MEDICUS
Crediamo che i pazienti informati ottengano risultati migliori. Ecco ogni fase del tuo percorso Dental Cleaning di trattamento.
Medical & Dental History Review
We update your medical history, check current medications (some affect gum health), and review any concerns you have noticed since your last visit.
Comprehensive Oral Examination
Your dentist or hygienist checks all teeth for signs of decay, existing restorations, gum pocket depths, and any areas of concern. Intraoral photos may be taken for your records.
Supragingival Scaling
An ultrasonic scaler vibrates at high frequency to efficiently fragment and remove calculus deposits above the gumline. This is followed by hand scaling with curettes to clear finer deposits between the teeth.
Subgingival Scaling
Below the gumline, fine-tipped instruments carefully remove plaque and calculus from within the gum pocket. In patients with early gum disease, this stage (root planing) is especially important for arresting disease progression.
Polishing
A rotating rubber cup with a mildly abrasive prophylaxis paste removes surface stains from tea, coffee, or tobacco. Teeth are left smooth, which temporarily makes it harder for new plaque to adhere.
Fluoride & Oral Hygiene Instruction
Optional professional fluoride application strengthens enamel and reduces sensitivity. Your hygienist then provides tailored advice on your home brushing technique, interdental cleaning tools, and any areas requiring extra attention.

Come Prendersi Cura del Trattamento
Seguire queste istruzioni garantisce la migliore guarigione e un risultato duraturo.
Resume normal brushing and flossing that same day — there are no post-cleaning restrictions
If you experience sensitivity after cleaning (common with heavy tartar removal), use a sensitivity toothpaste for 2 weeks
Avoid staining food and drinks (coffee, tea, red wine) for 24 hours after polishing to maximise the cleaning result
Book your next appointment before you leave — 6 months for healthy patients, 3–4 months if gum disease is being managed
Follow the oral hygiene advice given by your hygienist — small changes in technique make a significant long-term difference
“I had some problems on my bike journey and they received me very well. The staff is super friendly and competent and you can communicate in English. The clinic itself is very clean, modern and well equipped. I would definitely recommend the place if you have any dental issues while travelling.”

Domande Frequenti
Tutto quello che devi sapere su Dental Cleaning da MEDICUS.
How often should I get a professional cleaning?
Every 6 months is the standard recommendation for healthy patients. If you have a history of gum disease, smoke, or have certain medical conditions, your dentist may recommend 3–4 monthly visits to stay ahead of disease progression.
Is the cleaning procedure painful?
For most patients it is completely comfortable. Patients with gum disease, heavy calculus, or inflamed gums may experience some sensitivity during subgingival scaling. We can apply topical anesthetic gel in sensitive areas if needed.
Will cleaning make my teeth whiter?
Cleaning removes extrinsic surface staining and tartar, which can make your teeth appear noticeably brighter and cleaner. For significant colour improvement, professional whitening treatment is needed in addition to cleaning.
Can cleaning spread gum disease?
No. Professional cleaning is a primary treatment FOR gum disease, not a cause. We use sterile instruments and follow strict infection-control protocols at every appointment.
Do children need professional cleaning?
Yes. Children benefit from professional cleaning and fluoride application from the time their permanent teeth start emerging. Regular early visits also help children build a positive attitude toward dental care.
